Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like: each plank is one piece of timber, milled from a single board. That matters years later, because a solid floor can be sanded and refinished several times over its life. It is the only flooring we sell that a future owner can restore rather than replace, which is why it remains the benchmark for resale value in Metro Detroit homes.

It is also the fussiest about where it goes. Wood moves with humidity, so solid planks belong at or above grade over a wood subfloor — not in a basement, and not directly over concrete. They want a reasonably stable indoor climate, which in Michigan usually means running a humidifier in winter. Get that right and the floor outlives the mortgage.

Species is the decision that drives everything else. Red and white oak take stain evenly and hide wear well. Maple is harder and lighter, with a tighter grain that shows finish flaws more readily. Hickory is the hardest of the common species and the most dramatic in color variation. We carry all of them.

We stock 256 solid hardwood products from Lauzon, Somerset, Springcreek and Viking. Pricing starts around $3.25 per square foot and averages roughly $8.50, with wider planks and character grades at the upper end. Some brands are call-for-pricing.
